Charles John Fortson

M, ID# 14746, b. 24 October 1856, d. 10 July 1935
  • Other Names*: John Charles Fortson.6
  • Biography*: From a Fortson family history: He "attended Emory College, Oxford, Ga., where he was a member of Few Literary Society and a close friend and classmate of Warren Candler, who was to become Bishop of the Methodist church. Charles (called Charley by his friends) was christened John Charles, but in later years, when often confused with a 'Cousin Johnny' Fortson, a Baptist preacher, he changed his name to Charles John Fortson. He was a farmer and lumberman; a Methodist and Mason. He was something of an inventor and devised a number of useful appliances for his family: a folding ironing board (the first of its kind, though he never bothered to patent or market it), a clothes dryer, a beautifully carved bread tray and a churn carved into"one-piece out of a log of wood. In the late 1800's he obtained a patent on a railway train coupling device though he never marketed it (his daughter, Rebecca Boyst, remembers being allowed to play with the red cedar model when she was a child). He was a man of much creative ability; he always carried a tablet and pencil with him, writing poetry and essays and sketching out his ideas but he was a severe critic of his efforts and ultimately destroyed most of them. The little remaining reveals a sensitive, gifted man. His daughter, Minnie Truitt, describes him: 'A true Southern gentleman of the old school.11'"
  • Note*: He was christened John Charles Fortson but changed his name to Charles John to avoid confusion with a cousin. He attended Emory College in Oxford, Georgia. He was a farmer, lumber man, inventor (he patented a railway train coupling device), and author of poetry and essays. A daughter described him as a "true Southern gentleman of the old school."6
