     "Williamsburg, Va., July 23 [1891].—Dr. John Clopton died last night at half-past 9 o’clock after an illness of several weeks. The Doctor himself a short time before his death stated that he was suffering with a seere attach of the grip, which culminated in his death. He came here from Richmond about 1868 as assistant physician to Dr. A. E. Peticolas, at the Eastern Lunatic Asylum, and remained there until the 15th of April, 1890, when he resigned.
     "DURING THE WAR.
     "He was a surgeon during the war for the Fourth Texas regiment. He was an active Mason, being master of the lodge here or some years, and was district deputy in that order at the time of his death.
     "The funeral services will be from the Episcopal church tomorrow morning at 11:30 o’clock, and the interment will take place in Olive-Branch burying ground, in James City county, with Masonic honors. He was a Knight Templar, being at one time a member of a Richmond commandery. His age was fifty-six years. He leaves five children (three boys and two girls), all of whom are orphans of tender years, his wife having preceded him to the grave about twelve months."⁵
