  • Obituary*: MRS. C. J. FORTSON DIES AT HER LATE HOME
Washington, Ga., April 13 [1905].—(Special.)—Yesterday morning at 7 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. Charlie J. Fortson, at her late home at Tignall. Death came after a protracted illness from consumption. Mrs. Fortson before her marriage was Miss Sturgis, of Thompson, where the most of her immediate relatives now reside. She was 47 years of age and is survived by her husband and five children. The funeral services were conducted this morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. W. W. Brinsfield, and the interment occurred in the family burying ground at Pope's chapel.15
  • Note*: Her obituary in the Augusta [Ga.] Chronicle says she was 47 years old when she died on 12 Apr 1905, thus putting her birth date in 1857 or 1858; that contradicts the 21 May 1854 birth date in John Boyd's family history and the online records for the cemetery.16,11,3

Agnes Lizelle Walton

F, ID# 14794, b. 12 January 1876, d. 21 January 1931
  • Biography*: From a Fortson family history: "Agnes was born in Wilkes Co., Ga., daughter of John Howard Walton (d. 2-19-1899) and Agnes Lizelle Wooten (d. 7-15-1876), granddaughter of John Scott Walton and Mary Ann Irvine. It is unfortunate that a letter written to Agnes' sister, Minnie Walton Wynn, by Octavla Walton, daughter of George Walton II, son of George Walton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was inadvertently destroyed by Minnie's husband, W. R. Wynn, since it showed the relationship between John Scott Walton and George Walton. Through Mary Ann Irvine, John Howard Walton is descended from William Irvine, one of seven brothers who came to America between 1721 and 1730; William married Ann Craig, who is buried in Raloo near Mounthil, Larne, Ireland. William's son Christopher was Captain of a Virginia company in the Revolutionary War; in 1796 Christopher moved to Wilkes Co., Ga., and settled the old Irvine plantation in Wilkes. His wife was Louisa Tucker of Virginia, and their son Isiah Tucker Irvine married Isabella Lee Bankston, and their daughter Mary Ann married John Scott Walton."7
