- Marriage*: She married Robert Patrick Bates Sr. on 29 October 1874 in Navarro County, Texas.7,8,9,10
- Death*: She died on 13 June 1916 in her home, 1517 West Fifth Street, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, at age 67.11
- Burial*: Interment was on 15 June 1916 in Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.12,13,14,15
- Obituary*: “HIGHLY ESTEEMED LADY DEAD.
“Old Time Corsicana Resident Passes Away.
“Mrs. Vina C. Bates, wife of R. B. Bates, and a sister of Hon. Geo. T. Jester and of L. L. Jester, and of the late C. W. Jester, died at her home, 1571 West Fifth avenue, last night after a long and painful illness. Besides the brothers named the deceased is survived by one son, Robert Bates, and many nieces and nephews, children of Gov. Jester, C. W. Jester, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Hamilton and L. L. Jester.
“The deceased had been a resident of Corsicana since girlhood and had consequently spent nearly all of her life here and all our older citizens knew and loved her for her many noble womanly attributes, exalted character and kind and sympathetic nature. Nothing pleased her better than to do good to others, and many are the noble deeds that will keep her memory sacred wherever she was best and longest known. The last years of her life were sorely beset with physical infirmities, but all were borne with that Christian fortitude that had been characteristic of her life, and she met the grim reaper with the fortitude of a brave soldier and drew the drapery of her [word blurred and unintelligible] about her and lay down to pleasant dreams.
“The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon from the home at four o’clock, with Rev. J. W. Fort officiating and the following acting as pallbearers:
“Honorary—B. L. Davis, T. G. Brooks, C. L. Fewell, W. M. Tatum, B. H. Woods, Sr., and Rev. Abe Mulkey.
“Active—J. A. Jarrell, F. A. Elliott, T. L. Scruggs, W. M. Peck, Mitt Solwell, and Dr. R. N. Holloway.”.16 - Scrapbook*: “The death of Mrs. Vina Bates was a sadness to many old friends and relatives. A long residence here had made her part and parcel of Corsicana where, before the deplorable accident some years ago which made a cripple of her, she was active in church and social work and an ardent Daughter of the Confederacy. A woman of great pride, high ideals and intellect, who was highly regarded by the intimate circle of friends who knew her well. The writer was especially fond of her and enjoyed many interesting talks with her on the many subjects which interested her deeply.”.17
- Note*: Her grave marker (and several other sources, all of which probably are derived from the inscription on the grave marker) gives 9 Jun 1916 as the date of her death. It seems more likely that her obituary, published in a daily newspaper, is correct in giving 13 Jun 1916 as her date of death.18,19

Lowry Martin
M, ID# 10485, b. 2 February 1883, d. 31 October 1959
- Birth*: He was born on 2 February 1883 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.1,2,3,4,5
- Marriage*: He married Lila Jester, daughter of Charles Wesley Jester and Martha Eliza ('Lisa') Rakestraw, in 1912.6,7,8
- Death*: He died on 31 October 1959 in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, at age 76.9,10,11,12
- Burial*: Interment was in row 1, section G, Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas.2
- Note*: He began working for the Corsicana (Tex.) Daily Sun on graduation from Corsicana High School in 1902 and remained associated with it and its sister publication until 1953, during which he held many positions on the paper, including business manager, publisher, and co-owner. He served as president of the Texas Daily Press League and in 1932-1933 as president of the Texas Press Association. He also served as president of the Texas Centennial Celebration commission, president of the Texas Good Roads Association, and president of the Texas Advertising Club. The idea for the centennial celebration arose at an advertising convention in Corsicana in 1923, and he was generally credited with keeping the idea alive. Martin also served as a director of the Southwestern Medical Foundation in Dallas, as a director of the Trinity Navigation Association, and as a vice-president of the State Fair of Texas. He instigated three special "Texas" trains that traveled as goodwill ambassadors to the East to advertise Texas and reestablish confidence in Texas bonds and securities: the "All Texas Goodwill Tour" in 1929, the "Texas Press Special" in 1936, and the "Texas Centennial Train" in 1936. He was a Democrat, a Methodist, and active in the Lions Club, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Corsicana Chamber of Commerce, and Corsicana Community Chest. His biography on the Texas Press Association web site says that he was born on 5 Feb 1888, which appears to be incorrect.8,13
