Col. Harrison Tilghman
M, ID# 21800, b. 6 September 1885, d. 11 October 1961
- Birth*: He was born on 6 September 1885.1
- Marriage*: He married Mildred Fortson, daughter of Thomas Edward Fortson and Sarah Richardson Toombs, on 12 October 1940.2
- Death*: He died on 11 October 1961 in his home, Foxley Hall, Easton, Talbot County, Maryland, at age 76.1,3
- Burial*: Interment was in Oxford Cemetery, Oxford, Talbot County, Maryland.1
- Note*: • Col. Tilghman was an attorney and retired Army officer. He was stricken by an apparent heart attack while taking an evening walk in the yard of his home. He was dead on arrival at Easton Memorial Hospital.
His direct ancestor, Lt. Col. Tench Tilghman, was the aide-de-camp to Gen. George Washington in the Revolutionary War and carried the news of Lord Cornwallis’s surrender at Yorktown to the government in Philadelphia.
He graduated from St. John’s College in Annapolis in 1903. He then studied engineering at Lehigh University and graduated in 1907.
Col. Tilghman was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Coast Artillery Corps in 1909. In World War I he served in France and attained the rank of major. He was recalled to active duty in 1942, was assigned to the allowance and allotment branch of the adjutant general, became chief of the service division, and retired in 1945 as a colonel.
Between the world wars he was employed by National City Bank of New York and obtained a law degree from Fordham University.
He was secretary of the Maryland chapter of the Order of Cincinnati.
• Foxley Hall, the Tilghman family home, is an “impressive free-standing Federal house” at 24 North Aurora Street in Easton, Maryland that once was called Burnside. It is federal style on the outside but, since about 1889, has had a “gloriously extravagant late Victorian interior” thanks to Dr. Samuel Harrison, his son-in-law and local historian Oswald Tilghman, and architect Thomas Buckler Ghequir.4,5,6
