Andrew W. Webster

M, ID# 4534, b. 5 June 1831, d. 20 October 1909
  • Note*: "The Webster family is of Scotch descent, and is one of the oldest in the state of Delaware. [His] paternal grandfather was born in Scotland, where he spent his youth. Long before the colonies had struck a blow for independence, Mr. Webster, his two brothers, and their widowed mother sought a home in America. They settled on the borders of Pennsylvania, but afterwards removed to Fieldsboro, Appoquinimink hundred, New Castle county, Del., where Mr. Webster established a blacksmith shop. He was a sturdy, industrious workman, and was highly esteemed by his neighbors. During the struggle for independence, he was ever ready to serve his adopted country, fighting bravely in the ranks."11

John Cowgill Corbit1

M, ID# 4544, b. 20 January 1834, d. 27 April 1907
  • Obituary*: "DEATH OF J. C. CORBIT.
"He was a Prominent Citizen and Successful Business Man of Odessa.
"John C. Corbit, one of the most prominent men in the state, died Saturday morning at his home in Odessa, after a protracted illness, following the death of his wife three years ago. His funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 1.30 o’clock, with services at the house and interment in the Friends’ burying ground at Odessa.
"Mr. Corbit was a son of Daniel Corbit of Cantwell’s Bridge, near Odessa, and Eliza Naudain, a daughter of Elias Naudain and a sister of Dr. Arnold Naudain, who was United States Senator from Delaware from 1829 to 1835. He was born at Odessa and was in the seventy-first year of his age when he died. He was educated at Westtown Friends School and Haverford College, from which institution he was a graduate. He was president of the New Castle County National Bank at Odessa from the time of the death of Charles Tatman, about twenty years ago, and was also president of the Cantwell Fire Insurance Company.
"He married Emily, daughter of Alexander Peterson, of Philadelphia, and a native of Smyrna. Mr. Corbit’s health began to decline at the death of Mrs. Corbit, about three years ago.
"Mr. and Mrs. Corbit had three sons, Alexander P. Corbit, a member of the present House of Representatives of the Delaware Legislature; Daniel Corbit and John C. Corbit, Jr., who met death in a railroad accident in Philadelphia about two years ago. John C. Corbit, Jr., left a widow, who was a daughter of Joseph L. Gibson, cashier of the Odessa Bank, and an infant daughter.
"John C. Corbit was a brother of Daniel W. Corbit of Odessa, a sister [sic] of Mrs. E. T. Warner, a cousin of Judge William C. Spruance and ex-Senator Anthony Higgins, and an uncle of Mrs. Preston Lea, wife of Governor Lea.
"He was regarded as one of the most substantial business men in the section in which he lived and was highly respected."20
  • Note*: • After graduating from Haverford College he farmed near Odessa, Delaware and became president of Cantwell Mutual Insurance Company and a director of the New Castle County National Bank at Odessa. He owned a mansion in Odessa and several farms in St. Georges and Appoquinimink Hundreds.
    • A family history and Find A Grave give his birth date as 20 Jan 1836, but that is too close to the birth date of his brother, Daniel Cowgill Corbit to be correct. Other sources give his birth date as two years earlier, 20 Jan 1834, which seems more likely to be correct.21,22,23,24

Eliza Naudain Corbit1

F, ID# 4547, b. 26 October 1861, d. 31 October 1945
  • Scrapbook*: "PRETTY HOME WEDDING
"Preston Lea and Miss Eliza Naudain Corbit Married.
       "MANY PROMINENT PEOPLE PRESENT
"The Ceremony Performed by the Rev. W. N. McVickar of Holy Trinity Church, Philadelphia—The Bride and Groom Members of Representative Delaware Families—Wedding at the Home of E. Tatnall Warner.
"Preston Lea and Miss Eliza Naudain Corbit, daughter of Mrs. Charles Corbit, were married at the home of E. Tatnall Warner, No. 903 Delaware avenue, last evening at 6 o’clock in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends, many of whom came from a distance.
"The wedding was one of the prettiest of the post-Lenten season. It was a quiet but brilliant home marriage. The parlors and library of the house were profusely decorated. Lilies, ferns, potted plants and cut flowers gave the interior the appearance of a conservatory. The fragrance of the flowers added charm to the impressive ceremony about to be performed.
"The nuptial knot was tied by the Rev. William McVickar, rector of the Holy Trinity Church, Philadelphia, where the bride formerly attended. The ceremony took place in the library, only a portion of the walls of which could be seen through a dense bank of ferns and potted plants.
"The bridal couple were unattended. The bride appeared charming in a becoming gown of white satin, trimmed with white chiffon. She wore a white veil, and carried a bouquet of lilies of the valley.
"After the ceremony a reception was held. Mr. and Mrs. Lea received many handsome and valuable presents. . . ."17
