- Note*: One source gives his name as Pierre Le Roux. He was one of four brothers who came with their mother from Amsterdam, where Peter most likely was born, to London in 1685 to join their father, who had been there five years. He moved to New York City in 1688 and married there in 1692. They settled in New Rochelle, New York, where he was town constable in 1698-1699 and later served in other public capacities. He and Alida had five to seven children. Alida, who married Elias Naudain, was the eldest, and the only son was named Peter. Like his father, the son held local office.2

He founded Fieldsborough, Delaware on a large tract of land he owned at the intersection of the road between Odessa and Blackbird and the road between Taylor's Bridge to Noxentown. From Ruth Bennett's "Naudain Family of Delaware," p. 39: "There is a tradition to the effect that when the frames of the first houses [at Fieldsborough] were ready to be raised the workmen requested Fields to supply them with whiskey on that occasion. He replied that it was 'hard Scrabbling' enough to get money to pay them without giving them whiskey. Thereupon the workmen bought their own liquor and christened the village, giving it the name of Hardscrabble." It was frequently called by that name into the 1900's.
