  • Obituary*: "DEATH OF MRS. ANN HUNT
       "She Was One of the Very Early Pioneers of This Country.
       "She Came Here in 1835—Husband Preceded Her June 27, 1910 . . . .
       "Mrs. Ann Hunt, widow of William Claiborne Hunt, passed away after a brief illness at her home, No. 101 North Woodlawn avenue, at 4 o’clock Thursday morning [17 Jul 1913]. Ann Smith was born in Sutton, England, August 15, 1821, and came here with her people in 1835. On November 21, 1843, she became the wife of William Claiborne Hunt. They settled on forty acres in Union township and lived in a little log house, sharing the little comforts and the troubles of other pioneers. Mr. Hunt continued to add to his holdings, and by and by a handsome brick structure took the place of the log house, and in 1901 they sold the farm and moved to the city to make their home at No. 101 North Woodlawn avenue. Here the good husband passed away June 27, 1910. Mrs. Hunt was a faithful member of the M. E. church, and was held in high esteem in a very wide circle of relatives and friends. The surviving children are: W. A. Hunt, of Burlington; Mrs. Martha Jackson and Charles Hunt, who live on the island of Cuba; F. B. Hunt, of Burlington, and J. P. Hunt, of Mt. Pleasant. There are seventeen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    The funeral of this famous pioneer will be held from the family home, at 3:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Friends are invited to these services. The interment in Aspen Grove will be private."13

       "Dr. J. P. Hunt, 78, who practiced dentistry here for many years, died at the Memorial hospital about midnight Tuesday night after undergoing an operation at the Memorial hospital earlier in the evening for hernia.
       "He had been working around his home Tuesday, but late in the day it became necessary for him to go to the hospital and have the operation.
       "He is survived by three daughters and four sons, Alice of Mt. Pleasant, Ethel of New London, Mrs. J. N. Reschly of Noble, Arthur of Washington, D. C., Paul, Mt. Pleasant, Walter, who is in the army in Alaska, and Maynard of Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Hunt preceded him in death 12 years ago.
       "Dr. Hunt had practiced here since 1909, but a few years ago moved his office to his home. He had previously practiced at Palla, Des Moines and Chariton.
       "Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at ten o’clock at the Crane Funeral Home. Burial will be at Forest Home. The remains will be at the Funeral Home and friends may call there."15
  • Note*: He graduated from State Wesleyan University, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, in 1885 and practiced dentistry. He lived in Pella, Des Moines, Chariton, and Mount Pleasant, Iowa.9
