John Farrar Callaway

M, ID# 1553, b. 10 February 1773, d. 29 October 1848
  • Note*: In 1800 he was selected as one of the original representatives to the North Carolina House of Commons, representing Ashe County, was elected senator in 1803, and served several senate terms thereafter. He also served Ashe County as a justice of the peace. He followed his father and brother James to Knox County, Tennessee in 1811, and the 1812 tax rolls attributed 160 acres and one slave to him; by 1826 he owned 160 acres and seven slaves. His participation in the War of 1812 is unclear--he may have been in charge of shipping provisions down the Tennessee River--but after the war he was known as "Major Callaway." He was elected sheriff of Knox County in 1814 and served successive terms until 1826, when he was appointed U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Tennessee, a position he occupied until about 1830. His mother, who died in 1823, lived with him for her last few years. In 1827 he moved to the Sweetwater Valley in Monroe County, Tennessee, south of present Philadelphia, and there built the first brick house in the area. In 1842, at age 69, John moved to the part of Van Buren County, Missouri, that is now Cass County, with most of his children and their families, sister-in-law Rebecca Hodges and her husband, and brother James and some of his children. He lived there another six years, until his death at his home near present Peculiar, Missouri. His estate included 330 acres and about $7,000 in personalty, including eighteen slaves. He was active in the Baptist Church. He and Sarah had fourteen children, of whom eleven reached adulthood.14,21

Joseph Bartlett

M, ID# 1575, b. 13 January 1775, d. 1 January 1864
  • Scrapbook*: "J. B. McMichael came to [Madison County, Illinois] in 1826 from Tennessee; he was at that time a boy of eleven years of age. He indentured himself to Uncle Joe Bartlett and remained with him until he was twenty-one years of age . . . ."7
  • Note*: Some sources say they were married on 5 Apr 1798. They moved to Kentucky shortly after their marriage. In 1807 they moved to Illinois, first locating near the old village of Milton in the Wood River Settlement and in 1809 settling in Pin Oak Township, east of Edwardsville, in Madison County. He acquired a considerable amount of property, served as a ranger during Indian conflicts, helped build Ft. Russell, north of Edwardsville, and served in the Black Hawk War with three of his sons, martin, Nicholas, and Jesse. From James Alonzo Matthews, Jr.'s Pearce, Bartlett, Matthews, Smart, and Allied Families: "'Uncle Joe,' as he was familiarly called, often related that he attended school only eight days, but after that, by close application and intuition, he qualified himself quite creditably. He was the third assessor and treasurer of Madison County, and he held other offices of trust and responsibility. It has been stated of him that he was a man of domestic habits and that he did not even visit the neighboring city of Saint Louis, though it was less than twenty-five miles distant, for forty-four years previous to his death on January 1, 1864. The horse ferry had just been established about the time of his first trip there in 1819, and his surviving friends state that, having but little curiosity for new or strange things, he never went to see a steamboat or railroad during his life, preferring to devote his whole time to domestic affairs and his books. He was a man of excellent mind, well stored with information, especially in politics. In his day, he was considered a walking history of Tennessee, where many of his friends and early pioneers had emigrated from during the first settlement of the country. He had a well selected library and also a file of the papers then published in Illinois and Tennessee."8,9

Lydia Bartlett

F, ID# 1577, b. 1779
  • Note*: The name of her first husband, with whom she lived in Tennessee, is unknown. "He was a politician, and he got into an altercation of some kind, presumably over politics, the details of the dispute were never known, but during the wrangle he was stabbed to death." She and her second husband, Mr. Sitton, lived in Illinois. It is not known whether she had children of her first marriage; she had none of her second.4

Esther Bartlett

F, ID# 1578, b. 27 June 1783, d. 10 September 1857
  • Note*: • She was born in the part of Virginia that in 1863 became West Virginia.
    • After living in Knox and Blount Counties, Tennessee, they set out for Illinois in 1812 but were compelled by Indian conflicts during the War of 1812 to stay for a while at a blockhouse in Kentucky, where their fifth child was born. They settled in Madison County, Illinois in 1812 or 1813, then moved to newly created Bond County about 1817, settling about four miles southwest of Greenville, near Hill's Fort, where five of their younger children were born. After living in southern Illinois for about twenty years, they moved to McDonough County, in western Illinois, in 1832 and to Burlington, Iowa in 1837, where they and their five sons settled on about 1800 acres that remained in the family for several generations thereafter. She died at the home of her son John.7,8

Martha ('Selah' or 'Celia') Bartlett

F, ID# 1580, b. circa 1786
  • Note*: It is suggested that she was the Selah (or Celia) Bartlett who is identified in Maryland Quaker records as having married out of meeting in 1803. She and her husband may have settled in Georgia and are thought to have had a son, Allen Pearce, who lived in Caldwell County, Kentucky, and perhaps other children. She is not mentioned in her father's will, but that may be because she already had received her share of the estate.5
