"PIONEER RESIDENT NAVARRO COUNTY PASSED AWAY TUESDAY AFTERNOON
"Funeral services for Walter W. Clopton, aged 72, native Texan and resident of Navarro county practically all of his life, who died in the Navarro Clinic Tuesday afternoon, were held from the family residence, 522 North Beaton street, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock with interment in Oakwood cemetery. Judge Clopton died Tuesday afternoon at 3:55 o’clock. He had been in ill health for some time, but his condition was not regarded serious until a short time before his death. His left leg was amputated in an effort to save his life Monday.
"The services were conducted by Rev. John W. Bergin, pastor of the First Methodist church and the Corsicana Lodge No. 63, I. O. O. F., had charge of the services at the grave. He had been a member of the local Odd Fellows Lodge for 40 years and was a member of all the branches of the order. Judge Clopton served as secretary of the subordinate lodge, scribe of the Encampment and clerk of the Canton for a number of years in addition to having been a member of the Texas Grand Lodge and serving as secretary of the board of trustees of the Widows and Orphans Home board here for nineteen years.
"Early Day Alderman.
"Judge Clopton was serving his fourth year as justice of the peace, Precinct 1, Place 2, at the time of his death. He formerly was in the mercantile business here and was one of the first aldermen of Corsicana. Prior to moving to Corsicana 45 years ago, he resided at Chatfield and Rice. He was born at Huntsville.
"He was a grandson of Judge Lynn, the first district judge in the Republic of Texas.
"Surviving are his wife who formerly was Miss Ellen Redden, a son, Ward Clopton, Latex; and a brother, Charles Clopton, Seattle, Washington.
"Practically all departments of the Navarro county courthouse were closed during the funeral hour.
"Pallbearers were W. A. Mowlam, W. J. Seelig, S. W. Burdine, W. M. Huff, W. J. Lunn and Lee Moss.
"Honorary pallbearers were W. K. Steele, Arthur Levi, W. D. Nolan, Harris Ransom, W. H. Hanley and Hubert Ferguson.
"The funeral was directed by the Sutherland Funeral Home."17 - Note*: • Cemetery records give 1857 as his birth year.
• He was a prominent Odd Fellow, was a justice of the peace for several years, had been a merchant in Corsicana, Texas, and at the time of his death had lived in Corsicana for forty-five years.
