Robert Alexander Cochran1

M, ID# 4946, b. 19 July 1836, d. 3 September 1922

Robert A. Cochran's tombstone, Forest Cemetery, Middletown, Del.
  • Obituary*: "ROBERT A. COCHRAN DEAD AT AGE OF 86
"Prominent Retired Citizen of Middletown and Member of Distinguished Family.
       "Special Correspondence Every Evening.
"Middletown [Del.], Sept. 4 [1922].—Following an illness of about two weeks, of stomach trouble, and other ailments incident to advanced age, Robert A. Cochran, one of Middletown’s oldest and most esteemed citizens, died yesterday morning about 1 o’clock, at his home on Cass street. He observed his 86th birthday on July 19.
"For about sixty years Mr. Cochran was a farmer. About seven years ago he disposed of his farm, Mt. Airy, located a short distance below Middletown, which was known as one of the best farms in that section, and moved to Middletown. He was deeply interested in all phases of farming, and because of his knowledge and experience in the work, he was known as an authority on agricultural subjects, and his advice was frequently sought.
"Mr. Cochran was a son of Robert Thomas and Sophia Moody Cochran, and the last member of a family of six sons and two daughters. His brothers, R. Thomas, Richard R. and Daniel M. and his sisters, Mrs. Samuel R. Reynolds and Mrs. Nowland, died some years ago. He was a nephew of former Governor John P. Cochran, who served as governor from 1872 to 1876.
"After receiving his early education in Middletown, Mr. Cochran went to the Hill Academy at Pottstown, Pa. After finishing at that institution he began farming. He married Miss Lydia Eddows Naudain, a member of a well-known Odessa family, who died some years ago. They had 11 children, seven of whom are living.
"Although interested in all public affairs, Mr. Cochran could never be persuaded by his friends to become a candidate for public office. He was a Democrat. While he was a farmer he was one of the chief promoters of the Middletown fair, which formerly was held at Middletown, and was one of the directors of the fair association.
"Surviving Mr. Cochran are seven children, James B. Cochran, Mrs. G. Spencer Comegys, Mrs. M. Louise Griffith, Mrs. John R. Cochran, Mrs. William R. Crow, Mrs. J. Wallace Beaston and Miss Josephine Cochran.
"The funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, standard time, at his late home. Rev. P. L. Donaghay, rector of St. Anne’s P. E. Church, will be in charge. Interment will be made in Forest cemetery."25
  • Note*: • Robert was a farmer and grew peaches, grain, and asparagus and raised Holstein dairy cattle. For more than sixty years he lived at Mt. Airy, in New Castle County, Delaware, which his father had bought from Andrew Snow Naudain. He sold it in 1917 and moved to Middletown, Delaware, where he lived until his death in 1922. His date of death may have been 1 Sep 1922.
    • "After receiving his education in the public schools of [Saint George’s hundred], at the academy of Middletown, and in the seminary in Pennington, N. J., he remained with his father upon the homestead until he reached his majority. In 1857, he removed to the farm which he has ever since occupied and cultivated, in Appoquinimink hundred; this land formerly belonged to Dr. Arnold Naudain, but is now owned by Robert Thomas Cochran. Besides cultivating farm products in general, Mr Cochran devotes much attention to rearing good breeds of stock, and to the dairy business; he has spent the greater part of his life on this farm, and is a skilled and successful agriculturist. Mr Cochran is of genial and cheerful manners, lively and hospitable, a man of free but kindly speech, and of domestic tastes and habits. He is a Democrat, interested in the success of his party, but not caring to secure office or its spoils for himself. … The home over which Mrs. Robert Cochran presides is socially a centre of attraction; the family is noted for beauty, intelligence, and refined and discriminating taste in literature and the arts, particularly in music."26,27

  • Obituary*: • "DEATH TAKES EDWARD REYNOLDS
"Well Known Business Man Dies at Middletown . . .
       "Special to THE EVENING JOURNAL.
"MIDDLETOWN, Del., Jan. 3 [1910].—Edward Reynolds, one of Middletown’s best known citizens, died at his home on North Broad street, on Saturday morning, of kidney trouble. Mr. Reynolds was the son of the late John A. Reynolds, and was born on his father’s farm near Newark, August 10th, 1840. He attended the public schools of that vicinity and later spent four years in the Newark Academy. He was graduated from Delaware College in 1859, and received the degree of A. M. from the college in 1872. After leaving college he taught for two years in Delaware and in the Plainfield Academy near Carlisle, Pa.
"In 1864, Mr. Reynolds became a partner with his father and brother in the general mercantile business, in Middletown, under the firm name of J. A. Reynolds and Sons. Mr. Reynolds retired from the firm in 1872, and in the same year purchased the Middletown Transcript, assumed the duties of editor, and made the Transcript one of the best weekly papers on the peninsula. In 1877, Mr. Reynolds retired from the management of the Transcript, and again entered the mercantile business, with his brother, the firm name being S. M. Reynolds & Company.
"In 1878, the firm purchased the business of T. O. Culbredth, of Dover, and Edward Reynolds took charge of the new store, under the firm name of E. Reynolds and Co. Later, Mr. Reynolds had a store in Trenton, N. J., his family living there for a time.
"Mr. Reynolds was a Democrat, but never sought office.
"In 1868 he became a member of the Presbyterian Church. For three years he was a trustee of Forest Church, and in 1878, he was ordained an elder. For years Mr. Reynolds has been treasurer of the church.
"For several years Mr. Reynolds has been in the insurance business, having an office here and one in Wilmington. Recently he gave up the Wilmington office because of ill health. He has been town treasurer for some years.
"In 1871, Mr. Reynolds married Mary J., daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Naudain, who with two daughters, Mrs. D. P. Barnard, Jr., of Wilmington, and Miss A. Louise Reynolds, of New York, survive him.
"Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o’clock, at his late home, with interment in Forest Cemetery."
    • "EDWARD REYNOLDS.
"Edward Reynolds, a son of the late John A. Reynolds, of the Newark section, and since 1864 a resident of Middletown, where for several years he conducted the Transcript and was later a member of S. M. Reynolds & Co., died at his home there, Saturday, of kidney trouble, aged 69 years. He was a graduate of Delaware College, Class of ’59. Of late years he was engaged in the insurance business. His wife, who was Miss Mary J. Naudain, survives him with two daughters, Mrs. D. P. Barnard, Jr., of Wilmington, and Miss A. Louise Reynolds, of New York City. His funeral was held on Wednesday, with interment in Forest Cemetery, Middletown."5,6
  • Note*: He taught school for a few years after graduating in 1859 from Delaware College. He gave that up after a few years and went into the mercantile business in Middletown, Delaware with his father and Samuel, his brother, and owned and edited the Middletown Transcript. He also was a trustee and elder in the Forest Presbyterian Church in Middletown for many years.7
