He apparently signed up or was drafted into Co F 1st Tennessee Cavalry. He served as a teamster according to a pay voucher dated May 2, 1864. He was taken prisoner September 4, 1864 at Green [Greene] County, Tennessee, and was sent to Chattanooga December 31, 1864. He was transferred to Louisville, Kentucky, January 8, 1865, and from thence to Camp Chase, prisoner of war camp, outside Columbus, Ohio. There he died January 29, 1865, of pneumonia. He was buried there."4
