  • Obituary*: An Old Pioneer Gone.
    Died at the residence of Mrs. W.H. Martin in Hill County, Tex., on July 8th, 1901, Mrs. R.V. Mitchell, wife of D.J. Mitchell of Bute. She was interred on the 9th in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Deceased had been sick for over a year and the family concluded that the change might benefit her, but to no avail. Deceased was born in Twiggs County, Georgia, and immigrated to Navarro County, Texas in 1857, but for the last five years has made her home in Henderson County, near Bute. She was 58 years old and died in the faith, believing, as the Bible teaches, that God is a Spirit and seek such to worship him that do worship him in spirit and in truth. She was a kind and affectionate wife and mother and a good neighbor. She leaves a husband and several children and a host of friends to mourn her death, but weep not, dear friends, for your loss is her eternal gain.

  • Obituary*: Mr. D. J. Mitchell, a highly respected citizen of Henderson County, Texas, departed this life March 6th 1919 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred Heard, at the ripe old age of 73 years, liking one month. He was born in Jackson County, Mississippi, April 5th, 1846; he leaves surviving him two sons and three daughters, namely: Charley C. Mitchell, Nat Mitchell, Mrs. Nena Heard, Mrs. Mattie Smith and Mrs. Emma T. Loughridge; another daughter, Mrs. Anna Pickle, died in Athens a few years ago. His wife, whose maiden name was Rebecca Virginia Gallemore, preceded him to the silent resting place years ago. Mr. Mitchell was buried in the Post Oak grave yard, Rev. T.M. Pace officiating. He was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for over 40 years.
    Mr. Mitchell lived a very checkered life, with more rough than smooth places running through it, and while he would be classed a poor man according to the usual acceptation of that term, he nevertheless was a successful man, judged from the highest ethical standard, for he raised a large family of boys and girls that are above the average intelligence, all active and respected members of society in their several communities.
    The following incidents of his life are taken from his autobiography published some ten years ago.
    He was of English descent, his ancestors being of the aristocracy; many relics bearing the family court of arms have been handed down and are now prized possessions of connections of the family. He was left an orphan at the age of 6 years, with four brothers and sisters. At this time they were living in Pensacola, Fla. A near relative of means took the five orphan children to care for and educate to Columbus, Miss. His education was pushed rapidly and at the early age of 16 he left a military school to don the gray uniform of a Confederate soldier, and saw four years of service under General N.B. Forrest. In 1867 he was a mariner sailing southern waters; in 1869 he was a night watchman on a steam boat plying up and down the Trinity River; in 1871 he married and settled down to farming and stock raising in the Rural Shade community in Navarro County. At about this time he joined the Missionary Baptist Church, and remained a member of that order until May, 1877, when he joined the Primitive Church. Some 12 or 15 years ago he moved to Henderson County and has been a citizen of the county ever since, with occasional pilgrimages to Navarro County, where some of his connections still reside.
    Mr. Mitchell was a good man, of some eccentricities and peculiarities, of strong convictions, that he tenaciously held to whether right or wrong; he was honest, courageous and energetic and will be greatly missed in the community in which he lived. He was of a literary turn, who wrote a number of songs, among the best known of his publications, "Sunlight Hills of Picardy," may be said to be the best.
