"Special to The Gazette.
"HELENA, August 15 [1895].—Mr. Jamie Clopton, for twenty-five years one of the most prominent merchants in Eastern Arkansas and a planter of experience and success, died this morning at Denver, Col., where he went some weeks ago in search of health. Mr. Clopton owns some of the best plantation property in Arkansas and one of the handsomest stores in Arkansas. His brothers are Col. Hoggart Clopton and Mr. Jesse P. Clopton, of this county, and William C. Clopton, of New York City. He leaves a wife, four daughters and one son. His remains will be brought here from Colorado for burial.
• "NECROLOGICAL.
"CLOPTON.
"This morning, at 9 o’clock, at Denver, Colorado, in his fifty-seventh year, our esteemed fellow citizen, Mr. James W. Clopton, departed this life. It has been known for some months that Mr. Clopton was not long for this world,—nevertheless the announcement of his death comes with a shock to his many friends in this community. He had been in ill health for several years and has made a brave fight for his life, several times rallying for a short time and showing evidences of returning vigor. The decline was gradual, however, and the fight a fruitless one. On Saturday last he was so ill that he dictated a letter to his wife, explaining that he was quite sick from the effects of injudicious eating. On Monday a telegram announced that he was very sick, but not dangerously so. On Tuesday another telegram called his faithful wife to his side. She left at once, and arrived in Denver, yesterday afternoon. This morning a wire from Billy Pillow announced his death.
"No citizen of Phillips county was better known or more universally respected than Mr. Clopton. He had been in business in the city for the past quarter of a century and his mercantile career was an honorable and successful one. It is true that within the last few years he had met with some reverses, owing to the panic of ’93, and that his affairs are somewhat involved, but it is a fact, nevertheless, that he was an intelligent, prudent and successful merchant. Probably no citizen of Helena was a better authority on cotton, or more successful in handling it. He was one of the group of citizens who, twelve years ago, funded the city debt. He helped to organize the Chamber of Commerce, was one of its presidents and one of its most progressive members in its palmiest [sic] days. He was a good father, a kind husband, an honorable citizen, a model merchant. He went into the war as a member of the Yell rifles and was with Cleburne at Shiloh, where he was wounded. He accepted the results of the war in good faith and the Republic had no better friend than he. Mr. Clopton carried $25,000 of life insurance, all of which was in force at the time of his death. He leaves three brothers, Messrs. Hoggatt, Jesse P. and William C., the latter living in New York, a wife, four daughters and one son, all of whom have he sincerest sympathy of the World.
"Due notice of the funeral will be given tomorrow or Saturday.
• "FUNERAL SERVICES.
"The funeral of the late Mr. J. W. Clopton was held at the Methodist church, yesterday afternoon, at 4:30 o’clock. The sad task of bringing the remains from Colorado devolved upon Mrs. Clopton who came along to Memphis, where she was met by Mr. S. C. Moore. Mrs. Clopton tells of the kindness of Will Pillow to her in Denver, and says that she could not have borne her trouble without his kind help. The pall bearers, Messrs C. R. Coolidge, S. H. Hornor, J. T. Brame, R. C. Moore, P. O. Thweatt, J. I Moore, J. C. Barlow and Chas. Wooten, and Confederate veterans awaited the arrival of the body at the Valley depot, yesterday afternoon, and accompanied it to the family residence. The service at the church was conducted by Mr. S. L. Rieves and Dr. M. B. Corrigan. In the choir were Mrs. J. A. Tappan, Mrs. B. L. Lyford, Mrs. C. L. Moore, Miss Aura Jaquess, Messrs L. J. Wilkes and C. R. Coolidge, Jr.
"Three songs were sweetly sung by the choir, ‘One sweetly solemn thought,’ ‘Jesus Lover of my soul’ and ‘Nearer my God, to thee.’
"Mr. Rieves read from the scriptures, offered a prayer and spoke a few words concerning the deceased, words fraught with comfort to the sorrowing family and friends. Dr. Corrigan testified to the bravery, nobleness, kindness and generosity of Mr. Clopton, a testimony which found an echo in the hearts of all his hearers. A prayer by Rev. Corrigan and a song concluded the service at the church. Mr. Clopton was buried in Evergreen Cemetery where Dr. Corrigan concluded the funeral service by pronouncing the benediction.
"The universal esteem in which Mr. Clopton was held by the people of Helena was evidenced by the large concourse of friends assembled in the church and the long procession of carriages which bore his many friends to the cemetery.9,10,11 - Note*: • He was educated in Phillips County, Arkansas, where his family moved when he was ten years old.
• In the Civil War he joined Yell's Rifles under Major General Cleburne and served the Confederacy until the end of the war. He was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh, captured while home on furlough, and held prisoner at Alton, Illinois for five months until exchanged. He rejoined his regiment at Murfreesboro, Tennessee and was appointed a sergeant.
• His Find A Grave memorial gives 16 Mar 1839 as his birth date.
• A famiy history says he died in Helena, Arkansas, but newspaper items published at the time of his death say he died in Denver, Colorado.12,13,14,15,16

- Death*: She died on 29 July 1898 at age 50.6,2
- Burial*: Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery (also known as Evergreen Cemetery), Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas.2
- Obituary*: "NECROLOGICAL
"Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Clopton, wife of the late James W. Clopton, died at a quarter to 12 o’clock, of malarial fever aggravated by congestion.
"This announcement will come as a surprise to this community, a large majority of whom did not know she was sick. Her illness was of only a few days’ duration, and was not thought to be serious except by Mrs. Clopton, herself, who had been despondent and hopeless for two or three days. Last night congestion ensued and early this morning Mrs. Clopton said she knew she was going to die, but hoped to last until noon today, at which time her daughter, Miss Edna Clopton, who went to Columbia, Tennessee, a few days ago on a visit, was expected to arrive. She made a gallant struggle to live until she could see this dear child, but it was in vain. All of her children, and Col. Hoggatt Clopton, her brother-in-law, were with her at the moment of dissolution. She was fully conscious up to an hour before her death and talked to those around her bedside.
"Mrs. Clopton was 50 years of age yesterday. She was a Miss Elizabeth Rainey and was married to Mr. J. W. Clopton in 1866 or 1867. Mrs. Clopton’s mother was a daughter of Mr. Arthur Slaughter, well known to many of our older resident. She was born in South Carolina and came to Arkansas with her mother and step father, the late Huger Dade, her mother having been widowed while living in South Carolina. She was a member of the Presbyterian church as her father and grandfather had been before her, and was a most excellent woman in all the walks of life. It is doubtful if a more devoted wife and mother ever lived than Mrs. Clopton. Quiet, modest, loving her husband, her children and her home, she filled out her allotted years in living for them,—finding always in them her greatest happiness and pleasure. Three years ago, on the 15th of this month, her husband died, followed in a few months by a beautiful daughter, Miss Alice. The stricken mother rallied from these severe blows, gathered her remaining children about her, took up the broken threads of life and sought to fill up the measure of her days with devotion to them. How well she succeeded her children and her friends know.
"Mrs. Clopton leaves four children, Mary, (Mrs. Henry E. Coolidge), Edna, James and Bessie. Shortly before her death she called for her son-in-law, Mr. Coolidge, and told him she was going to leave three little children,—they were all little to her,—and she wanted him to be kind to them.
"The World joins the entire community in extending sympathy to this devoted and stricken family.
"The funeral will take place at five o’clock tomorrow evening from the Presbyterian church."7 - Note*: • She was from Macon, Mississippi.
• A family history and her Find A Grave memorial say she died on 29 Jul 1898. Her newspaper obituary seems to say she died on 3 Aug 1898.8,9,10
