Wanting to get into World War II, in which the United States was not yet fighting, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He became a flight instructor and became known as "Buck Rogers" because of his flying ability. After the war he became a pilot for Braniff Airways and flew U.S. and South American routes for them until he reached mandatory retirement age in 1978. In retirement he was an avid golfer, fisherman, hunter, and tennis player.⁴
