     "Mrs. E. M. Bates, 92, passed away in Wellington [Kansas] on December 21, 1970.
     "She was born in Kansas City, Mo. on July 19, 1878, the daughter of Capt. and Mrs. E. B. Millett.
     "Her father was a rancher and cattlemen in the early days and had a ranch in Ellsworth County which was later known as the Sherman Ranch.
     "Eugenie was married to Russell Bates in 1908 in Albuquerque, N. Mex. and lived on the Sherman Ranch for 35 years. She and Mr. Bates moved to Salina and after his passing, she moved to Kansas City to live with a daughter. In 1967 she moved to Wellington to make her home with her daughter and son-in-law.
     "Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. J. M. Little of Wellington and Mrs. J. W. Reid of Jordan, N. Y., and there are three granddaughters, two grandsons, seven great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
     "Graveside services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 24, 1970, in the Ellsworth City Cemetery, with the Grubb Funeral Home in charge.
     "Yost-Gwynn Funeral Service was in charge of the Wellington arrangements."¹¹
