- Obituary*: "MR. FORTSON DIES
"Mr. H. C. Fortson, who has been in feeble health for quite a number of years, being confined almost all the time to his home on Zebulon street, peacefully passed away last Saturday.
"The funeral and burial occurred Sunday afternoon from the First Baptist church, Rev. Arthur Jackson, the pastor, conducting the service, and paying a beautiful tribute to the life of the deceased. Dr. H. S. Yerger, who was an intimate friend of Mr. Fortson, also spoke tenderly of the good man whose friendship he appreciated.
"Mr. Fortson was 77 years old, having been born in Elbert county. About fifteen years ago he moved with his family to Barnesville from Clayton county. He was a member of the Baptist church, joining the church when he was about fourteen years old.
"When he came to Barnesville he soon made many friends among the people of the city. He liked to be among his friends and a cordial fellowship existed between him and many of the citizens. He was greatly missed by then when he became too feeble to longer be among them down town. Mr. Fortson was a man of convictions and always had the courage to express his views on all public questions. He was a Christian of strong faith and stated that he was ready to go when the call would come for him to go to his eternal reward.
"He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Rufus Bush and Miss Jessie Fortson of Barnesville, and four sons, Messrs. Charles, William and Clarence, and Mr. Sam Fortson, who has been making his home with the family in Barnesville.
"The members of the family have the deepest sympathy of all the people in the sorrow which has come to them in Mr. Fortson’s death."14
