    • He served in the US. Army in World War I.
    • He served for a few years as secretary of the Lombard Iron Works and in 1932 established the S. Donald Fortson Company in Augusta, Georgia. It dealt in mill, mine, textile, and contractors' supplies. Eventually the company was based i, Asheville, North Carolina.11,12
