Lodowick (Ludwig) Zirkle1,2,3,4

M, ID# 2106, b. 9 October 1705, d. 1746
  • Note*: His first name may have been Johann. He probably had a son, George Henry Zirkle, by an earlier marriage in Germany. He came to America in 1725 with his father and twin sister. He owned some land in Pennsylvania, and they farmed near Telford, in the Philadelphia area. The Rising Sun Inn, built in 1739, a short distance from Little Zion Church in Telford, stands on his land. They were Lutherans, and he gave one acre of land to be used for a Lutheran church 'so long as soon a moon a shining' (so long as the sun and moon shine). He was a farmer and saddler.

Maria Eva Bear1,2,3

F, ID# 2107, b. circa 1710, d. 1771
  • Note*: She, two daughters, and five sons moved to near 'the Forest,' now known as Forestville, in what then was Augusta County, Virginia (and now is Shenandoah County), probably in August 1753. In 1755 she obtained a grant or patent for seventy-five acres on a branch of the Shenandoah River; the warrant for the survey, which was made in late 1754, said that this land adjoined other land she owned. They may have lived around Culpeper, in East Virginia, for a year or so before settling in the Shenandoah Valley. She had no children by her marriage to Christopher Ottinger. She probably was buried in the Zirkle graveyard on the east bank of Holman's Creek, which now is a pasture without grave markers, about one mile northeast of Forestville.

  • Note*: On 17 Jul 1763 Lewis (or Ludwig) bought twenty-five acres from his brother, Andrew, straddling Holman's Run in the southeast corner of the tract Andrew had bought from George Brock, Jr. just south of Forestville, Virginia. He operated a tan yard there for nine years, until he sold it to another tanner, John Roush, in 1772. About then they probably moved to what then was Augusta County, Virginia (and now is in Rockingham County), about three miles southeast of New Market, as on 3 Jun 1774 he surveyed a 300-acre tract there on the east side of Smith Creek, for which Thomas Jefferson, Governor of Virginia, issued him a land grant on 1 Mar 1781. The Endless Caverns were discovered on this land on 19 Oct 1879. They lived on Smith Creek, about three miles southeast of New Market, Virginia. He wrote in German. They were Lutherans. At his death he owned 1500 acres, a tannery, and a flour mill. They are believed to be buried in unmarked graves in the St. Matthew Lutheran cemetery in New Market.10

  • Note*: One source says he was born about 1742 in Telford, Pennsylvania. He bought land in the Moore's Store area (southeast of Forestville) on Holman's Creek in what now is Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1773 and sold land on the creek in 1782 and 1783. He served in the Virginia Militia in Shenandoah County in 1775. They probably moved to Botetourt County, Virginia in 1783 or 1784, as he was paying taxes there in 1784. He farmed and owned an ordinary (tavern), a still, and slaves. His will, dated 25 Jul 1818, indicated he owned considerable land on the James River, about four miles south of Iron Gates, Virginia. His wife is mentioned in the will, which was probated in October 1818, and so probably survived him.9

George Adam Zirkle1,2,3

M, ID# 2112, b. circa 1740, d. August 1800
  • Note*: One source says that he was born in 1738 in Pennsylvania. Some local historians believe he returned to the Fredricktown, Maryland area, where he learned the wheelwright's trade and married, before permanently settling in Virginia. For a number of years he lived at Forestville, Virginia. He lived on Smith Creek, near New Market, for several years and there farmed with his brother, Lewis. They then lived on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, about two miles west of New Market. He owned about 1000 acres when he died. He wrote in German. They were members of Pine Church, now St. Mary's Lutheran Church, until 1790, when he assisted in the organization of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in New Market.11

Henry Head

M, ID# 2116, b. circa 1695, d. 5 May 1765
  • Note*: Tax rolls of Lancaster County, Virginia suggest that Henry, Frances, and Harry probably lived there in 1716. In 1743 Henry and Frances sold land in King George County that the Proprietor of the Northern Neck had granted to her father, and the deed indicated that they were then living in Spotsylvania County, where son Alexander bought land that year. Henry's estate included eight slaves, five pewter dishes, and 388 other dishes.5
