Sarah ('Sallie') Loop1,2

F, ID# 772, b. 7 January 1813, d. 8 May 1892
  • Obituary*: "Sarah Beck, or aunt Sallie Beck, as she was familiarly known, died at the residence of her daughter, Mary Burk, near Shenandoah, Iowa, May 8th, 1892, aged 79 years, 4 months, and 1 day. She was the daughter of Christian and Eva Loop, and was born in Augusta county, Virginia. She was married to John Bowman in the year 1828 Was the mother of eight children and reared six of them, which are grown and married—four sons and two daughters. In the year 1865 her companion was taken by death, the children all having been married and settled. She afterwards married to Anthony Beck, a highly respected citizen of Montgomery county, where they continued to live united until Mr. Beck’s death in 1881, after which she passed most of her time with her children, the last two years of which she lived was with her son and daughter, of Iowa. Here remains were taken, accompanied by her son, Andrew Bowman, back to the old Providence church, of which she was one of its first members, where funeral services were conducted by Elder Johnson, of Lebanon.
After the remains were viewed by many old friends and relatives they were laid to rest by the side of her former companion in the old Providence Cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn, when the graves are to give up their dead to be judged by Him that doeth all things well.
This ends the earthly life of one that endure many years of hardships and trials subject to this life of which she many times longed to depart that she might be at rest. Passing quietly away with a smile on her face, leaving the testimony that she has gone to enjoy that sweet rest.
Mr. Bowman, of Red Oak, Iowa, with the remainder of the friends, wishes to extend their sincere thanks to the people of New Ross and vicinity for their kindness shown at the burial of the deceased."28
  • Note*: • In 1832 she and John moved to Walnut Township in Montgomery County, Indiana.
    • One source says she lived in Iowa.29,30

  • Note*: He came from Virginia to Boone County, Indiana with his parents in 1834, at age 18. At age 21 he worked one year for his father, then bought 160 acres of land. By 1881 he owned 384 acres, which he farmed, and lived in Mace, Indiana. He also owned 1000 acres in Iowa as a young man. A life-long democrat, he was constable as a young man, member of the county board of supervisors for two years, justice of the peace for over eight years, treasurer of the Horse Thief Detective Association for many years, and township trustee two terms. He was an elder of the Presbyterian church at Union, two miles east of Mace, but she was a Methodist. He acted as administrator of different estates, which fact, it was said, 'proved that the integrity and conscientiousness of his life in the community led the people to accord him respect and confidence.' One source says he married Elizabeth on 27 Dec 1832. Some sources say he died on 15 Oct 1909 in Boone County, Indiana.35,36,16

  • Note*: He was a farmer in Montgomery County, Indiana. The grave marker identifies his wife as Peggy Loop, whose marker says she died on 3 Dec 1875 at age 58 years, 8 months, 18 days, suggesting her birthdate to be 16 Mar 1817. Death records of Montgomery County indicate he married an Airhart. The 1850 census for Boone County, Indiana suggests his wife then was Elizabeth, born about 1817-1818 in Virginia.

Carl Raymond Loop

M, ID# 795, b. 9 September 1877, d. 23 July 1923
  • Scrapbook*: "Carl Loop left for Chicago last Saturday where he will attend the summer term of the Chicago University."7
  • Obituary*: "LOOP’S DEATH DUE TO ACT OF HEROISM
"The death of Carl R. Loop, United States consul at Malaga, Spain, was caused by an infection from which he became a sufferer when, after rescuing two drowning persons on the beach at Malta, he lost his footing and was swept into a sewage trap several years ago, according to friends here.
"Word of Mr. Loop’s death was received by the State Department yesterday. He was a native of New Ross, Ind., and was appointed to the consular service while living in Crawfordsville.
"Mr. Loop lived here for a time and has several distant relatives in this city. He attended Butler college, where he was prominent in athletics, and later took up the practice of law. About fifteen years ago Mr. Loop entered the consular service. He was assigned to Malaga about six months ago.
"He was bathing on the beach at Malta when two persons, a man and a woman, both Italians, shouted for help. After much effort, Mr. Loop succeeded in saving both. He was so weakened by the struggle, however, that when he attempted to walk out of the surf he was unable to resist the strength of an undertow and was carried into the trap. He never had been well since and had a number of operations performed.
"His wife, who survives him, was formerly Miss Ethel Roberts, daughter of the late John A. Roberts of Indianapolis. He also is survived by a daughter, Miss Mary Loop, who is with her mother in Spain."8
  • Note*: • He was American Consul to Sicily at the time of his death.
    • One source says he was Vice Deputy Consul General for the United States in London, England.
    • One source says he died on 23 Jul 1923.
    • He practiced law in Indianapolis, Indiana for several years and then was in the U.S. consular service for sixteen years.
    • He died from an abscess of the lungs, which he contracted after saving a young couple from drowning in Italy. He was ill for about a year.
    • He was survived by his wife and a fifteen-year-old daughter.9,10,11,12,13,14
