John Grehegan McFadin

M, ID# 2245, b. 25 March 1894, d. 27 October 1942
  • Note*: He was named for a friend of his father. He served in the U.S. Army in World War I, which impaired his health. From Nell McFadin's sketch of him in Wagons, Ho! A History of Real County, Texas: "John McFadin served in the Armed Forces during World War I and was stationed with the Army of Occupation in Germany for six months after the war ended. During his early training in the Army he said 'inspection of Arms' was made very often and during one of those inspections he accidentally fired his rifle (fortunately it did not hit anyone); his Sergeant gave him a wooden rifle to carry for several days. The Sergeant probably thought this would embarrass him but, he always had a great sense of humor, so he thoroughly enjoyed it. (At least that was his story.)" He and Annie lived on a small ranch about seven miles southwest of Leakey, Texas, and the children rode horses to school in Sabinal and Leakey. He died of a heart attack.13,5
