  • Obituary*: "He was a graduate of McMinnville High School, then served for three years during WWII in the U.S. Navy. Upon his honorable release in 1947, Carl enrolled at Linfield College where he met Miriam 'Jean' Knarr. The two hit it off and were united in marriage in Gresham on Sunday, 5 October 1947.
       "In 1949, they moved to Eugene, Oregon where Carl became an Oregon State Police Officer, a position he continued to hold for several years even after he and Jean settled their family in Tillamook where Carl was transferred in 1953.
       "After leaving the State Police, Carl worked at the Diamond Lumber plywood mill for a few years, then took a job with Day & Night TV. Eventually, he purchased the business with a partner, and they changed the name to Teletronics and remained in business for more than twenty years. By the time Carl sold the company and retired in 1986, it was operating as Radio Shack.
       "Carl was a member of the B.P.O.E #1437 in Tillamook. He enjoyed hunting. . . .
       "His family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so may make memorial donations in his name to either the United PAWS or the Oregon Humane Society."5

  • Obituary*: "Miriam 'Jean' (Knarr) Hansard, 90, passed away at her Tillamook, Oregon home on Saturday, 21 December 2019.
       "Jean was born in Gresham, Oregon on Tuesday, 26 February 1929, to Charles (Dick) and Margaret Elva (Spence) Knarr. Her father owned and operated a sand and gravel business, and was also the town's mayor at one time. Jean and her brothers, Richard and Bobby were raised in Troutdale, Oregon, along the Sandy River. Sadness hit the family when, in 1937, Bobby contracted polio and died at age ten.
       "Jean graduated from Gresham High School and attended Lin?eld College. There, she met returning WWII veteran, Carl B. Hansard, Jr., whom she married in Gresham on Sunday, 5 October 1947. The couple moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1949 where Carl began working as an Oregon State Trooper. He and Jean moved their family to Tillamook in 1953 when Carl was transferred.
       "Jean was a self-described “stay-at-home” mom until her three children were in school; then, she went to work at the County Extension Of?ce for a time; and, ultimately, for the Neahkahnie School District Of?ce, where she worked for many years as their secretary before becoming their bookkeeper. After retiring, Jean volunteered at the Tillamook Hospital.
       "Hers was a quick wit and she never lost her sense of humor. A music lover, Jean was a charter member of the Neskowin Chamber Music Association and a regular attendee of Monday Musicals. During her life, Jean had been blessed to travel to Europe, Hong Kong, cruise through the Panama Canal, and visit many destinations across the U.S. Her greatest joy was reading, but she always had a pencil in hand for the daily crossword puzzle. Jean also bowled for many years, and dutifully joined Carl and friends on annual autumnal hunting trips in southeastern Oregon. Jean never met a piece of salmon she didn’t like to eat, or a dog she wouldn’t pet. . . .
