Martha Cassandra Naudain

F, ID# 4403, b. 9 September 1855, d. 22 February 1908
  • Obituary*: "MRS. MARTHA C. DENNY
       "Died at her home on North Broad street in this town Saturday morning, February 22d, Mrs. Martha C. Denny, wife of John W. Denny, aged 52 years. She was the daughter of John and Martha Naudain, and was born near Townsend, September 9th, 1855, and was united in marriage May 12th, 1875.
       "Mrs. Denny had been an invalid for the past year, and all the care and love that skilled physicians and an anxious household could devise and apply for her comfort were cheerfully given but the fiat of Him who rules our incomings and outgoings had been issued, and despite the prayers and entreaties of those who knew and loved her, their appeals were overruled, and her spirit took its flight to that home the Christian believes is the fulfillment of the life everlasting. She is survived by a kind husband and six living children, who will long cherish her memory. The last services were held at her late home Tuesday afternoon at one o’clock, her pastor, the Rev. G. P. Jones officiating. The flowers were many and beautiful, but not more so than the face that rested so peacefully among them. The remains were taken to Townsend and interment made in Immanuel Cemetery.
       "Weep not that her toil is over;
       Weep not that her race is won.
       God grant we may rest as sweetly,
       When, like her, our work is done."13

John W. Denny

M, ID# 4404, b. 7 November 1845, d. 29 August 1909
  • Obituary*: "JOHN W. DENNY
       "The many friends of John W. Denny were shocked last Sunday evening when informed of his death, which occurred at 7.15 o’clock, at his home on North Broad street. Only his immediate family and a few personal friends were aware of his critical illness, and his sudden death came as a great surprise. He had been confined to his room for about two weeks suffering with Bright’s disease and other complications which resulted in his death. Deceased was aged 63 years.
       "Mr. Denny was one of the most widely known men in lower New Castle County, and at the time of his death was tax collector for St. Georges Hundred. He was a Republican, and took an active part in political affairs locally. Adhering to the faith of his father, he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church early in life, and through all the sorrows that he met in the way, his faith in God never wavered, and to-day, the autumn leaves are falling upon another grave that hides from our sight all that is mortal of this true and faithful man.
       "He was the son of the late Benjamin Denny and was born in Appoquinimink Hundred, and had spent his entire life in this section. About 18 months ago he lost his wife, who was the daughter of the late John Naudain. Deceased leaves four daughters, two sons and a large circle of friends to mourn his death.
       "Funeral services were held at his late residence on Wednesday afternoon at one o’clock, the Revs. V. S. Collins and W. H. Hotchin having charge, and interment was made in Immanuel Cemetery, near Townsend."
  • Note*: At the time of his death he was serving as tax collector for St. Georges Hundred in New Castle County, Delaware. He was a Republican and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.11
