Fred Pannill Hodge

  • Obituary*: Fred P. Hodge, 82, Chatfield native, retired oil operator and Magnolia wholesale agent, died Friday night in Memorial Hospital. He had returned to Corsicana in 1865 after residing 40 years in Wichita Falls and Electra. Hodge was honored at the Texas-Oklahoma Oil Fair as an oilman of 60 years.
    He was a member of the Magnolia Founder's Club and played baseball in and around Corsicana in the early days, once catching for Tris Speaker. He was a member of the John Tarleton 'Kirkettes' football champions of 1908.
    Hodge was a Scottish Rite Mason, Woodman of the World, a Presbyterian elder and Sunday School superintendent in Electra. He also served as chairman of the board of the Salvation Army in Electra and was a member of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce.
    He married Jan. 7, 1914 Miss Allie Pearl Speed of Corsicana. They had two daughters. . . .11

Allie Pearl Speed

  • Obituary*: Allie Pearl Hodge, 99, of Corsicana, died Aug. 11, 1993, in Corsicana.
    Graveside services were held at 9 a.m., Friday in Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. John Conley of Westminster Presbyterian Church officiating.
    Corley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
    She was born Dec. 31, 1893, in Elgin, Texas, the daughter of Carleton D. Speed and Jewel McCullough Speed. The family moved to Corsicana where her father was an early day oil operator. She graduated from Corsicana High school in 1911. She married Fred Pannill Hodge on Jan. 7, 1914 and lived in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas. They returned to Texas where they lived in Wichita Falls and Electra for 40 years. They returned to Corsicana in 1965.
    She joined the Presbyterian Church at the age of 11 and served where ever she lived as a pianist, Bible teacher, and in the choir. She was a Ruling Elder and Clerk of Session for 10 years at Electra and she was the 1953 Commissioner to the General Assembly in Philadelphia, Penn. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Kinsloe Clubhouse, Tune and Fork Club, Westminster XYZ club and the Trinity Sunday School class.
    On returning to Corsicana she taught the Women's Trinity Class and in Circles of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
    She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred P. Hodge in 1968, and a daughter, Jean Hodge Cramer.
    Survivors include [a daughter, five grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren] . . . ."4

Lewis Page Hodge

  • Note*: He attended Chatfield's public school and, after getting a teacher's certificate, in 1912 he began teaching at a ranch school in western Navarro County. He graduated from Denton Normal College in 1917, took a B.A. from Colorado State Teachers College in 1929 and an M.A. from George Peabody College in 1932, and later studied at the University of Texas and Duke University. He was a teacher and principal in Texas schools for almost forty years. He returned to Chatfield in 1955 to restore the family home, Hodge Oaks, to its original, antebellum condition.6

  • Obituary*: May Mott Hodge, 93, of Corsicana, died Dec. 29, 1989, at Navarro Regional Hospital. Services were 2 p.m. Saturday [30 Dec 1989] at Chatfield Methodist Church with the Rev. Dyton Owen and the Rev. Ken Shultz officiating. Burial was at Old Chatfield Cemetery under the direction of Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Mrs. Hodge was a member of the Chatfield Methodist Church and taught school in Barry and Baytown. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis P. Hodge, in 1978. Survivors include [a daughter, a sister, a granddaughter, and three great-grandchildren].16

Joseph Marchbanks Hodge

  • Note*: His World War I naval service was interrupted when he was stricken by influenza during the 1918 epidemic. He managed the family farms, and in 1974 the Texas Agriculture Department chose him as one of the first members of its family land heritage program, which recognizes farmers and ranchers whose operations have been in the family for more than 100 years. He lived in the Chatfield area, where he was active in church and community affairs and often served as election judge. He was an Episcopalian and an admiral of the Texas Navy.9,5

    JACKSBORO—Otey S. Hodge of Jacksboro, a retired employee of Magnolia Petroleum Co., died Friday at a Jacksboro nursing home. He was 98.
    Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Coker Funeral Home in Jacksboro.
    Burial will be in Chatfield Cemetery, north of Corsicana.
    Mr. Hodge was born in Navarro County. He was an employee at Magnolia Patroleum Co. for 40 years.
    He served in World War I and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
    The family suggests that memorials be made to the Jacksboro First Presbyterian Church building fund, 201 W. Archer St., Jacksboro 76458.
    Survivors: [Two daughters, two stepsons, sister, five grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren].15

    Service is Wednesday 3 p.m., Griffin Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Pat Whittemore and the Rev. Ien Schultz will officiate, with burial following at Old Chatfield Cemetery.
    She was the former Miss Lucy Sanders of Chatfield. She was born in Lumberton, M. C. and moved to Athens as a child and lived there until she married J. P. Hodge of Chatfield May 31, 1926.
    She was a graduate of Athens High School and Southern Methodist University and taught school in Navarro County until retirement. Survivors include [her husband, a son, three grandchildren, a sister, and a number of nieces and nephews.] Pallbearers are Jim Gill, Ed Blythe, J. M. Burkhead, Joe B. Harper, J. M. Hodge, Jr. and H. P. Hodge, Jr.13
  • Note*: She moved to Athens, Texas as a child and lived there until she moved to Chatfield when she married Persons Hodge. She was a graduate of Southern Methodist University and taught school until retirement. One source says she died in Chatfield, not Corsicana.7,14
