Wylie Calhoun ('Cal') Burdine

M, ID# 7843, b. 11 January 1859, d. 21 June 1924
  • Obituary*: "W. C. BURDINE DIED LAST NIGHT AT HIS HOME NEAR TUPELO
"When W. C. Burdine died at his home in the Tupelo community last night Navarro county lost one of its best citizens and his community and church one of their most loyal and useful members.
"The deceased was near seventy years of age, and had been a resident of this county since 1892, most of that time spent in the neighborhood where he died. The deceased was a steward of the Methodist church and a teacher in the Sunday school at Tupelo for many years. He was so thoroughly consistent in his life that all who knew him believed in and honored him, and his death is lamented by the people among whom he lived as a personal loss to each and every one.
"The remains were interred in Chatfield this afternoon after funeral services at the Tupelo Methodist church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. J. M. Hagers, and his presiding elder, Rev. C. A. Bickley, in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing friends, and many beautiful flowers were placed above his bier.
"Surviving the deceased is his wife and six children, James, Marvin and Baxter Burdine, Mrs. L. M. Williams, Mrs. Herbert Hervey and Mrs. Jethro Williams; three nephews, S. W. Burdine, E. C. Burdine and Stanley Burdine, and a niece, Mrs. L. L. Williams. He is also survived by a brother at his old home in Mississippi, and a sister in Oklahoma."14
  • Note*: After farming unsuccessfully in Mississippi, in 1892 they moved to Texas by train and settled near Barry, in Navarro County, where they farmed for four years. Success allowed them to buy mules and equipment and move to near Tupelo, in the northeastern part of the county, where they rented land and two years later bought sixty acres. Cal and Davis were active in the Tupelo Methodist Church.5
