- Obituary*: "William Fortson, son of Mr. Stephen Fortson, of Elbert county [Georgia], fell down the other day [7 Nov 1874] while chasing a rabbit and died almost immediately. The Elberton [Georgia] Gazette says the immediate cause of the death will probably never be known. An examination of the body was made, but no mark or bruise was found that would reveal the cause of death. An abrasure of the skin was found near the right knee (it was the right foot which gave way) and near that a bruise, both made by the fall, but beside those no other mark was made. It was at first given out that Willie had fallen down an embankment and the fall had broken his neck; but both these statements were erroneous. The ground where he fell was nearly level, save where the gully that caused the fall crossed it. This was washed out by rains since the land was ploughed. Where the fall occurred the ground was comparatively soft, and the indentions made by the body were very plain. A close examination of the neck was made, but it was plain there was no dislocation of the vertebral column."14
