"Washington, Ga., July 8 [1908].—(Special.)—The condition of Thomas E. Fortson, the prominent cotton factor of Washington who accidentally shot himself in the side early yesterday morning at his home on Spring street, is reported slightly improved today although it is yet too early for his physicians to tell the gravity of the wound. He spent a comparatively easy night and his family now entertain hopes of his recovery.
"Two sons of Mr. Fortson, Blanton E. Fortson and Edward N. Fortson, of Atlanta, had left Atlanta for a European tour when the news of their father’s serious accident was telegraphed Tuesday to relatives in Atlanta. A dispatch reached Blanton E. Fortson just before he embarked from New York and he will reach Washington tomorrow. The news came too late for the younger son who had sailed with his wife the day before."7 - Note*: He was a merchant and cotton planter.5
