He was a Republican who campaigned for William McKinley and Teddy Roosevelt and was elected to the California Senate in 1910. He practiced law and specialized in water rights and land titles. He was a member of the Masons, the Woodmen of the World, the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Elks, and the International Order of Odd Fellows.3
