"One of Mangum’s [Oklahoma] enterprising dry goods firms gave a $12.50 suit of clothes in a drawing contest. A Hobart boy, R. M. Bachman, held the winning card and therefore got the suit. Hobart always gets all the good things."
    • Bob Bachman was elected Grand Purse Bearer of the Council of the Grand Orient when it was established in Hobart, Oklahoma on February 10, 1909.
    • R. M. Bachman was a member of the Hobart, Oklahoma Firemen’s Pension Fund in 1918.
    • "R. M. Bachman, who has been in California, the past year, returned to Hobart [Oklahoma] Tuesday ofternoon, and will again make his home here."
    • "MILLIGAN—BACHMAN
"Mrs. Edna Milligan and R. M. Bachman of the Lucas Hardware Co., surprised their many friends by going to Oklahoma City Tuesday, where they were married by Rev. Martin, pastor of the Christian church.
"Mr. and Mrs. Bachman returned to Hobart Wednesday night and immediately went to housekeeping at 309 W. Fourth street."
    • "EXIT—THE BACHELORS
"Hobart [Oklahoma], so far as the public is aware, has never maintained a matrimonial bureau—one in which those seeking partners for life might repair and find willing persons to assist them in duplicating their responsibilities.
"While no such an industry has ever flourished within our city limits, still, to judge from results, the equivalent may be found in the Lucas Hardware Company, one of Hobart’s most popular stores. While matrimony is no part of their stock and trade, yet their employes seem to have no trouble in finding the altar.
"It has not been so many moons ago when John Rickel, bachelor, and member of the firm, found that it was not well for man to live alone, and so was married. A little later, Miss Denison, bookkeeper, was wooed and won, and since November 22, 1921, there has been a general stampede by the bachelors toward the fair sex. On the last named date, Bob Bachman [also a member of the firm], who was supposed to have been a confirmed bachelor, became head of a house; March 14, 1922, Charles House followed in Bachman’s footsteps, and Sunday morning Earl Wilson took up the trail which led to matrimony.
"If there are other bachelors in the community wanting wives, it might be well for them to apply to Lucas Hardware Company for employment."12,13,14,15,16,17

Capt. Thomas Callaway Sr.

M, ID# 1519, b. 12 October 1712, d. February 1800
  • Note*: His brothers moved into what is now Bedford County, Virginia in the mid 18th Century, but Thomas did not, living instead in Halifax and Pittsylvania Counties before moving to the New River in what then was Surry County, North Carolina. later became Wilkes County, and now is Ashe County. He and some of his sons had moved to the Greenville and Pendleton Districts of South Carolina by 1790, but some of them had returned to Wilkes County by 1796. One source states that he was born in 1700 and lived to age 100. From The Callaway Journal, vol. 1 (1976), p. 25: "It is told that Capt. Thomas [Callaway] and Daniel Boone were quite good friends and one day, while hunting near Calloway's home, Boone killed a deer. The deer fell across a long gray stone which Boone set up against a chestnut tree. Later, Capt. Calloway saw the stone and was so fascinated with it that Boone brought it to his home and carved upon it the initials, 'T.C.' So pleased was he that Calloway wanted it for a headstone at his grave, and there it was erected upon his death in 1800." In 1755 he was a captain in the Colonial Troops from Halifax County, Virginia in the French and Indian War, and in 1780 he and some of his sons participated in the Battle of Kings Mountain in the American Revolution.22,18,23

Col. Richard Callaway

M, ID# 1530, b. 14 June 1717, d. 8 March 1780

Kentucky historical marker for Col. Richard Callaway.
  • Note*: He lived in Bedford County, Virginia, and was a justice of the peace and officer of the county militia there. In 1754, in the French and Indian War, he was commissioned a captain at Blackwater fort and for his services was promoted to colonel in the Bedford militia. Thereafter he moved to Boonesborough, Virginia (now Kentucky). In a biography of Daniel Boone by John Mack Faragher, Richard is described as "officious, bad tempered, and a bit of a blue blood." He was killed by Indians as he worked with his slaves near Boonesborough; his body was scalped, mutilated, and rolled into a mud hole. Some sources give 1754 as the date of his marriage to Frances Walton. Calloway County, Kentucky is named for him.16,17,18,19,20
