Elizabeth ('Betty') Callaway1,2,3

F, ID# 2870, b. 14 August 1760, d. 15 October 1850
  • Note*: She and sisters Frances and Jemima were captured in an Indian raid on what is now Boonesborough, Kentucky. Two weeks after her rescue, she married one of her rescuers, Samuel Henderson, in Boonesborough in a ceremony at which Daniel Boone, acting under his appointment as a magistrate of Transylvania, officiated. Her father permitted the marriage on the condition that Samuel put up a bond that "he would have the marriage solemnized by less dubious authority at the earliest opportunity." Their son Alfred said he often heard his parents say that they were the first couple ever married in Kentucky and that his sister Fanny was the first child born there after marriage. They moved from Kentucky to North Carolina around 1780.15

Flanders Isham Callaway1,2,3

M, ID# 2888, b. between 1748 and 1753, d. 22 February 1829

Flanders Callaway house, St. Charles County, Mo., courtesy of Missouri Historical Society.
  • Will Abstract*: Will states he lives in Montgomery County, Missouri and is witnessed by Benjamine Sharp, Andrew McWilliams, and James Bryan.18
  • Note*: Various sources give different dates for his birth; information about his death also conflicts. He probably was born in the part of Albemarle County, Virginia that now is Bedford County. He migrated to Kentucky in 1776 and was one of the early settlers of Ft. Boonesborough. There he married Jemima in a double wedding with his first cousin, Frances Callaway. In 1798 or 1799 he and Jemima moved to what is now Warren County, Missouri, near Charette (now Marthasville), which then was the western part of St. Charles County. While living there he traded in fur with Daniel Morgan Boone, his brother-in-law, and William Lamme, his son-in-law, and trapped beaver as far west as Nebraska. He and Jemima were founders of Friendship Baptist Church in Charette. Flanders was a hard shell Baptist with strong religious convictions and was close to his family throughout his life but preferred to hunt alone. He has been described as tall, thin, and swarthy. At his death he owned ten slaves.19,20,21,13,22,23,24,25,26,27

Daniel Boone1,2

M, ID# 2890, b. 22 October 1734, d. 26 September 1820
  • Note*: He died at the home of his son Nathan. He was buried beside Rebecca in the Bryan family graveyard on Tuque Creek near Charette, Warren County, Missouri. In 1845 Kentucky officials relocated their remains to a private cemetery in Frankfort, where a fifteen-foot monument was erected in 1860. There have been stories since 1845 that the wrong remains were moved and that Daniel remains buried, in an unmarked grave, in the Bryan graveyard.

Chesley Callaway1

M, ID# 2895, b. 1760, d. 13 February 1846
  • Note*: He served in the Revolutionary Army on a campaign against the Cherokees, on the Long Island (Holstein River) expedition against Indians, at Fort Boonesborough in Kentucky, in driving cattle to Fort McIntosh, and at the Guilford, N.C. fight under General Greene. By 1789 he was in Lexington, Kentucky, and he probably spent the rest of his life in the part of Hardin County, Kentucky that became Ohio County, where he engaged in numerous land transactions. In 1799 he bought 333 acres north of Rough River on North No Creek, about six miles from Hartford, Kentucky. Although he sold off part of this tract, he seems to have remained on the rest of it until his death. He farmed and apparently owned no slaves. He was interested in politics and supported Andrew Jackson. The net value of his estate was $89.91.10
