     "Col. William H. Clopton, 68, organizer and director of the Army Transportation Association publication here, died yesterday at Walter Reed Hospital, where he had been a patient for a week.
     "A veteran of three wars, Col. Clopton began his military career in 1898 when he enlisted in the National Guard. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Regular Army in 1901, served in Cuba and the Philippines. He was with the Cavalry on the Mexican border patrol in 1912.
     "During World War I, Col. Clopton fought with the British and French in tank operations. On his way back from France to help organize the United States Tank Corps, his ship, the President Lincoln, was torpedoed.
     "Broker Here Until 1941.
     "In 1929, he retired as assistant chief of finance. He was a broker here until 1941 when he was called to active duty. He served in the Office of the Quartermaster General and the Army Transportation Corps. He again retired in 1943. Since that time he had been with the Army Transportation Association, with offices at 930 F street N.W.
     "Col. Clopton was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal during World War I and the Legion of Merit in World War II. He was grand lead and wheel of the Military Order of the Carabao, and a member of the Chevy Chase and Army-Navy Clubs.
     "An expert rifleman, Col. Clopton received a cup from President Wilson for his score in the President’s rifle matches in 1913.
     "Col. Clopton was born in St. Louis, Mo., and was graduated from Culver Military Academy. He had lived at 32 West Irving street, Chevy Chase, since coming here in 1917.
