   "C. B. GONTERMAN, MADISON COUNTY PIONEER, SUCCUMBS.
   "Was Descendant of John Stark and of Relatives of Mary Ball, Mother of Washington.
   "Caleb Ball Gonterman, aged 77, a descendant of Mary Ball, mother of George Washington, and a direct descendant of Jonathan Stark of revolutionary fame, died at his home, Walnut Hill, east of Edwardsville, early yesterday of paralysis. Gonterman was a member of a long-lived family. He was related to several hundred persons in Madison county.
   "Gonterman was a son of Caleb Ball Gonterman, whose parents went to Edwardsville from Kentucky in 1818. The son was born October 1, 1834, and had resided in Pin Oak township all his life. He was married December 28, 1850, to Miss Lydia Bartlett, of a family who settled in the county in 1810. His widow and three children, T. E. Gonterman, of Granite City and Misses Jessie and Laura Gonterman, who lived at home, survive him.
   "When Gonterman’s father moved to Madison county he got a grant of land from the government, which has been added to by his son, and includes several hundred acres of valuable farmland. Caleb Gonterman accumulated a fortune by farming. In early days he was a leader of the grange, a society among farmers for the promotion of agriculture.
   "Recently the genealogy of the family was compiled. It shows four aunts who lived to be very old. They were: Sarah Lindley, 100 years; Polly Barnsback, 96; Lucinda Houck, 87, and Caty Luttrell, 85.
   "The funeral will be Sunday afternoon from the family residence. The pallbearers will be: M. L. Geers and C. A. Geers, grandnephews; C. A. Bartlett, nephew, of Edwardsville, and Cyrus Wilbur and Courtney Gonterman, of Granite City, grandchildren."¹⁹

   "Mrs. Nancy A. Bartlett, wife of Joseph Bartlett, died at 4 o’clock Thursday morning [sic] [21 Jul 1921] in the family home, 1031 South Colfax street. She was 82 years of age last February. She had been in failing health for some time, and was stricken with paralysis ten weeks ago, which caused her death.
   "She was born in Madison county, Feb. 2, 1839. She was married to Joseph Bartlett on October 25, 1855. They moved to Decatur in 1888, where they have lived for more than 30 years.
   "Besides her husband Mrs. Bartlett leaves the following children: S. M. Bartlett, Decatur, J. S. Bartlett, Mt. Auburn, and J. E. Bartlett, Crescent City, Fla. Three other children, W. T. Bartlett, M. P. Bartlett, and Mrs. Martha A. Fletcher, preceded their mother in death. There are eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
   "Funeral services will be Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock in Sargent chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery."²
