Henry Harrison Hays

M, ID# 9606, b. 8 March 1841, d. 4 June 1899
  • Obituary*: "DEATH OF H. H. HAYS.
"One of Upper Alton’s Oldest Residents Gone to His Reward.
"Henry Harrison Hays, one of the oldest residents of Upper Alton, died Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock at his home on East Brown street. Mr. Hays had been confined to his home since last November, and for the past few weeks his condition was known to be serious, yet his death came as a sad surprise.
"Until a few years ago Mr. Hays was employed in H. M. Schweppe’s clothing store where he became widely acquainted. He was obliged by failing health to give up his duties in the store and retired to his home in Upper Alton to care for his health. He was stricken with locomotor ataxia shortly after and was soon a physical wreck. He bore his suffering with a Christian fortitude that excited the admiration of all who called on him. Blindness darkened his last few weeks of life and death was a happy relief. Mr. Hays had spent most of his life in Upper Alton, and was widely known in this vicinity. He was known without exception as a Christian and a man of many admirable and attractive traits of character. He was born in Coles county, Mo., 58 years ago. During the civil war he served as a private in Company C, 124th Illinois Infantry, and was seriously wounded in the battle of Champion Hills in ’63. For 42 years he had been a member and active worker in the Methodist church. In 1878 he was elected Superintendent of the Sunday school, which office he held without interruption until two years ago. In August 1871 he married Sara E. Bartlett, who survives him. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. M. M. Greene, of Upper Alton, Mrs. F. J. Clark, of Mattoon, and a brother, Stephen Hayes [sic], of Gayoso, Mo.
"The funeral took place this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the M. E. church."9
  • Note*: In the Civil War, he was a private in Company C, 124th Illinois Infantry, and was seriously wounded in the battle of Champion Hills in 1863. For most of his career he worked in a clothing ctore.7

F, ID# 9613, b. 18 April 1863, d. 24 November 1935
  • Scrapbook*: "Miss Bartlett Buried in Oakwood
"Funeral services for Miss Rhoda Bartlett were held this afternoon at 3 o’clock in Upper Alton Baptist Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. L. Robinson. There was a good sized gathering of old friends of Miss Bartlett at her funeral and a number of relatives. The nearest relatives surviving Miss Bartlett were her nieces, Mrs. Jane Pace Oertli, of Naperville, Ill., and Mrs. Bertha Hart, of Troy, who came to Alton immediately after being notified of her sudden death last Sunday.
"The funeral service was simple and brief as it was believed Miss Bartlett would have wanted it. There was no singing, but several hymns were played on the pipe organ. Burial took place in Oakwood cemetery immediately after the church service.
"A party of friends and more distant relatives arrived in Alton soon after noon from Troy to attend the funeral."13
  • Note*: • She was a school teacher.

    • She was active in the Upper Alton Baptist Church.
    • Her obituary in the Alton newspaper commented: "Many Alton men and women received their first instruction in the primary grade at school under Rhoda Bartlett."14,15,16,17,18

Lydia Bartlett

F, ID# 9638, b. 16 May 1837, d. 28 March 1938
  • Note*: She was born in a log house. After their marriage in 1858, she and Caleb settled on an eighty-acre farm one mile west of Marine, in Marine Township, Madison County, Illinois, where they lived in a one-room house. In the fall of 1886 they moved to a farm on the Edwardsville-Marine road in Pin Oak Township, Madison County. She and her daughters moved to their home at 660 Vandalia Street in Edwardsville on 27 Jan 1915, where she remained until her death in 1938. She died two months short of her 101st birthday, having been bed-ridden for more than a year but able to receive friends and well-wishers on her 100th birthday.12
  • Scrapbook*: • "Mrs. Gonterman Observed Day.
"Mrs. C. B. Gonterman, one of Madison County’s oldest residents observed her 93rd birthday anniversary today without a special gathering but she was visited by a number of friends this afternoon and others were planning to spend a part of the evening with her. Although she is only a few years away from observing her 100th anniversary she is in exceptional physical condition.
"Mrs. Gonterman is a granddaughter of one of the county’s earliest residents. Her paternal grandfather, Joseph Bartlett, located in Madison County during 1807. Members of the family have lived in the county continuously for 123 years."
    • "OLDEST CITIZENS OBSERVE BIRTHS
       "Mrs. C. B. Gonterman 97 Next Wednesday . . . .
"Two of Madison County’s oldest citizens, each nearing the century mark, will observe their birthday anniversaries next week. They are members of the first families that arrived in Madison County.
"Mrs. C. B. Gonterman of Edwardsville will be 97 years old on Wednesday of next week. Although only three years from being a century old she is rather active, is able to be up during most of the day and gets about the yard at her home on East Vandalia street.
"Her paternal grandfather was Joseph Bartlett, who arrived in the Wood River settlement in 1807 and two years later entered a farm in Pin Oak Township. Her father, Jesse Bartlett, was born on that farm and it was also the scene of her birth. A few of the relatives will be present for a birthday dinner. . . ."21,22
