Jane Murphy

       "The Grim Reaper Claims Without Discrimination.
       ". . . Mrs. Jane Bartlett, who for 45 years was a resident of Madison county [Illinois], died Saturday, December 11 [1897], at the home of her son, J. N. Bartlett, at Glenwood, Schuyler county, Mo. The funeral took place there Monday, December 13.
       "Mrs. Bartlett’s maiden name was Murphy, she being a daughter of Hugh Murphy, a pioneer of Pin Oak township. She was born in Tennessee in 1820 and when three years old came to this county with her parents. She was the last of a family of eleven. At the age of 22 she married Nicholas Bartlett. Nine children were born to them, seven of whom, two daughters and five sons, survive. The husband and father died here in 1861 and six years later Mrs. Bartlett moved to Schuyler county, Mo., settling on a farm, where she lived until recent years, when she left the farm and went to live with her children. In 1856 she united with the Methodist church in this city, and remained true to that doctrine. She leaves several relatives in this vicinity to mourn her death."6
  • Note*: She was born in Tennessee, moved with her parents to Madison County, Illinois at age 3, and in about 1867, six years after her husband's death, moved to Schuyler County, Missouri. She was a Methodist.5

  • Obituary*: "John W. Bartlett, a pioneer of Clarke county, died at his home near Manor on Monday aged 68 years, of smallpox, so diagnosed by some and chickenpox by others. He has been ill three weeks with the disease, and it assumed a malignant form. He came to this county in 1865, and was well known and respected by all who knew him. He leaves children as follows: Mrs. J. K. Alexander, Manor; Elmer and Oscar Bartlett, Idaho; Mrs. W. E. Morris, Vancouver; Mrs. P. Fairchild, Idaho; Arthur and Bud Bartlett, Portland. He was born in Iowa and since coming west has resided in this county and in Idaho. His remains were buried in Flatwood cemetery."14
  • Note*: What is now Clark County, Washington was Clarke County until the spelling was changed in 1925.15
