He served in the unit with brothers Martin and Nicholas. He moved from the old Bartlett homestead in Madison County, Illinois to Chariton County, Missouri in August 1870. The old Bartlett homestead, where Jesse and his first wife, Nancy Ann, are buried, is about four and one-half miles southeast of Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois.^26,27

     "Mrs. Jane Bartlett, an old resident of the county died at her home in Upper Alton Friday last [14 Dec 1894] at the age of 74 years. She had been sick since October 15th. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church at Upper Alton and her body was interred in the cemetery there. Mr. and Mrs. Elias Hoskins, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Hoskins, Mrs. E. C. Scheer, Mrs. Wm. Holle and Miss Laura Gonterman, of this city, attended the funeral. She was married when she was eighteen years old to William Bartlett. Eight children were born, two of whom died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Hagler, died in Missouri, in 1888. One son and four daughters survive, viz Mrs. H. H. Hayes, of Upper Alton; Marion Bartlett and Mrs. Andrew Keown, who reside in Missouri and Misses Middy and Rhoda Bartlett who lived with their mother. Here father Alois Hoskins, who resides in this city, and four brothers and two sisters also survive: Elias Hoskins, of Edwardsville; Ed and Wm. Hoskins, of Missouri; Mrs. Adeline Howard, of St. Louis and Mrs. Wm. Holle, of Edwardsville. She had been a widow for over 30 years, her husband having died in the army. His remains were interred at Mount Hope cemetery, Worden, but will be removed to Upper Alton. She was a member of the Baptist church forty years."¹¹

  • Her obituary says she was seventy-four years old when she died on 16 Dec 1894, but that seems to be wrong by ten years based on all other sources, which give 1830 (or 1833 in one case) for her birth date.^12,13,14,15
