  • Obituary*: "Mary Jane Callaway (nee Null), daughter of Martha and George Null, was born near Troy, September 2, 1845, and departed this life for life eternal, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Vernia Fileder, January 22, 1935, being at the time of her death, 89 years, 4 months and 20 days.
       "She was married to Stephen Calloway, July 25, 1898 [sic], and to this union six children were born, all dying in infancy, except one daughter, Mrs. Vernia Fielder, with whom she lived until the time of her death. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Ann Chapman, of Ashton, Kan., and Mrs. Cinny Hall, of Beaukess, Tex. [sic], besides five grandsons and a host of nieces, nephews and friends to mourn her passing.
       "She united with the Methodist Church at Alexandria under the pastorate of Bro. Magerate. As she lived her entire life in that community, she was a faithful and devote [sic] member until her death. She was a woman of fine character, a loving mother and grandmother and a good neighbor, always willing to help others and will be greatly missed by relatives and friends.
       "Services were conducted by Rev. John Golden Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church and the body was laid to rest in the beautiful city of the dead at Old Alexandria. Some sweet day in the Father’s house we hope to meet and labor together again."10

    ¶ I give to my wife Sally Bush during her natural lifetime the plantation whereon I now live, my negroes Caesar, Oscar, Esther, Emily, and Comfort, two horses namely Buck and the Sorrel Mare, four of my best ploughs, and one Coluter, six cows & their calves, twenty-five Hog, four sheep & lambs, three beds, bedsteads & furniture, and one half of the household & kitchen furniture to be chosen by herself. Also 500 pounds bacon, 300 bushels of corn 200 pounds fodder for her support this year.
    ¶ I desire and direct that all the rest & residue of my estate and property not embrased [sic] in the foregoing clause be divided soon after my death into five equal portions; and I give devise & bequeath one equal fifth part to my daughter, Sarah DeLoach, & to her heirs forever; one equal fifth part to my daughter, Phereby Ward, & to her heirs forever; one moiety of another equal fifth part to my daughter, Elizabeth Whitlock, & her heirs forever; and the moiety of said fifth to my grandchildren, Isaac Slaten & Sarah Slaten & to their heirs forever to be equally divided between them; and the remaining equal fifth part to the sole & separate use of my daughter, Mary Swearingen, during her life, not subject to the control of her husband, and upon her death to her children then alive & the issue of any who may be dead leaving children, to be equally divided between them.

Three horses name [sic] Lightfeet & her colt & Charles, two (of her choice) Cows & Calves, five ewes and lambs all the farming implements and tools including wagon & gears all the household & Kitchen furniture except 2 beds with bedding and all my stock of hogs and bacon and corn on hand.
    ¶ I give to my daughter Vicey Bush all that part of my land lying between the Old Cow Trail & Absolam Horn & Gamillion land & my negro girl Edney during her natural life & to the heirs of her body after her if any, if none, to my son Isaac Bush at her death, and one bed with bedding complete.
    ¶ I give to the trustees of Sarah Morris my daughter & for her use as they may see proper one hundred dollars to be paid to them (R. Ward & J. Bush) by my Executor Silas Bruce.
    ¶ I give to my daughter Harriet Bush my negro girl Cindy and one bed with bedding complete.
    ¶ I desire and direct that all the rest & residue of my estate and property not embraced in the foregoing clause be divided soon after my death in the following portion to be equally divided by valuation that is the land & negro (the rest sold) among the following children: Linn Celia Claxton, William Bush, Bibby Bush, Cinthia Howard, Mary Bruce, Elinor Edson & Betsy Crouch, except as relates to the land she to have no further interest in that having had her share before. My daughter Harriet mentioned in fourth clause to be made equal with these in this clause if what I already given her should not prove their equal.
    ¶ Upon the death of my wife, I direct device [sic] & bequeath that the portion of my estate which I have given her for life (except Jane & her increase if any) & General, be given to my youngest son Isaac Bush with all its increase if any and that my negro girl Jane with increase if any & General be sold and equally diided among all my children mentioned in the fifth clause, share & share alike.
    ¶ Should my wife Mary Bush marry again the portion of my property left her, to be given to Isaac Bush my son & others directed in with clause precisely as though she was dead.
    ¶ I nominate & appoint Nichaie Watson, Tilman Watson, and John L. Lott (& in the event of sickness or death of any of them for the two remaining choose a third) Commissioners or appraisers in value & equally divided as near as possible that portion of my property mentioned in fifth clause.

  • Will Excerpts*: ¶ I, William Bush, of Edgefield District in the State of South Carolina do hereby make and declare my last Will and Testament.
    ¶ I give unto my wife Elizabeth Bush one third part of all my personal estate and property I also give unto my wife all my real estate or the plantation whereon I now live during her natural life or widowhood and at her death or intermarriage to be the sole and separate undivided estate of my son, William Burgess Bush.
    ¶ I desire and direct that all the rest and residue of my estate & property be divided into nine equal portions. First, I give devise & bequeath one equal ninth part to my daughter Lucretia Williams and her heirs forever, one equal ninth part to my daughter Lucinda Randall and her heirs forever, 1 equal ninth to my daughter Harriet Bush and her heirs forever, one equal ninth to my daughter Cinthia and her heirs forever, one equal ninth part to my daughter, Mary Bush and her heirs forever, one equal ninth part to my daughter Addeline Bush and her heirs forever, one equal ninth part to my won William Burgess Bush and his heirs forever.
    ¶ It is also my wish and desire that my Negro man Primas and Stock of horses and cattle and hogs and sheep be all sold soon after my death on a credit of twelve months that is the above named property and the balance or portion I leave with my wife consists of the following named property that is eight negroes namely Amy, Ceaser, George, Matil, Peter, Delphia, Lucy and Martha and household and kitchen furniture of every description also the plantation tools and farming utensils of all kinds as also the crop of all and every kind.
    ¶ I further more direct and device [sic] and bequeath that the balance of my estate and property remain with my Wife until my youngest son, William Burgess Bush, becomes of age or his intermarriage with this exception that my Daughter Harriet Bush have to the amount of forty dollars and that all the rest of my unmarried daughters have the sum of forty dollars each when they intermarry or become of age and when my youngest son becomes of age as before stated that all the balance of my personal estate and property be sold on a credit of 12 months giving to my wife, Elizabeth Bush, one third part and the remainder to be equally divided as before stated in nine equal parts.
    ¶ I nominate and appoint my beloved wife Elizabeth Bush executrix of this my last Will & Testament with full power to sell or trade any part or parcel of the above personal estate or property in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of July 1837.
