  • Obituary*: "Death of Henry Airhart
       "Henry Airhart, a well-known and highly respected citizen, died at his home in Jackson township, Thursday, after a protracted illness. The funeral was held at Pisgah, a neighboring church, on Friday, and the body was interred near Beckville, Montgomery county.
       "Henry Airhart was born in Augusta county, Va., October 5, 1825. He came to this county in 1834, and has resided here continuously since that time. In April, 1846, he wedded Rhoda M. Beck, who bore him one child, and died January 15, 1850. In January, 1856, he married Miss Mary M. Golliday, who bore him seven children, and survives him. Of the children, Rodelphia E. McCarthy, Luella M. Dean, C. G. Airhart, V. G. Airhart, Ada R. Coons and Loretta A. Ashley are living.
       "The deceased was held in the highest esteem by his neighbors, and three times they elected him trustee of Jackson township. He has administered upon numerous estates, and all his dealings in life have been upright, honest and just. A truly good man has gone to his reward."25
  • Note*: From Early Life and Times in Boone County, Indiana (1887): "Henry came to Jackson Township, Boone County, in the fall of 1834, where he has ever since resided, and where he owns a fine farm and enjoys the confidence of the people he has so long lived among. He has served three terms as Township Trustee, to the entire satisfaction of the people. By trade he is a carpenter, but by choice has spent most of his time on the farm. . . . Henry Airhart belongs to the Baptist Church and is a stanch Democrat, first, last, and all the time." He and Rhoda had one child.7

  • Obituary*: Rev. Cornelius L. Airhart, 95, veteran minister who began his career in the pulpit at the age of 21 in 1881 and who had served churches in Boone, Montgomery, Parke and Putnam counties, died Thursday at 3:50 p.m. at his home here [New Market, Ind.]. He became ill last month and death resulted from complications. Rev. Airhart was ordained on May 30, 1885. He was active in the ministry until two years ago, serving as pastor of the Browns Valley Primitive Baptist Church of which he was also a member. In addition to his long service with the church, he held political office on two occasions, serving as a representative to the Indiana legislature from Boone County in 1901 and an auditor of Putnam county from 1910 to 1914. Rev. Airhart was a member of the Odd Fellows and Masonic Lodge. Born Sept 10, 1860 near Advance in Boone County, he was the son of Henry and Mary Galliday Airhart. He was first married in Boone County in 1882 to Adda May Canine and was later married in Montgomery County to Evelyn VanCleave in 1911. Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mayme Tate of Cortez, Fla; and Mrs. Blanche Jackson of North Salem; a son, Paul of Union, NJ: 8 living grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 12 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Two sons, Claude and Jesse and a daughter, Maude preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan 15 at 2 p.m. from the Noble Reeves Funeral Home with burial in Pisgah Cemetery in Boone County.18
  • Note*: He and Addie lived in Jackson Township, Boone County, Indiana, and he and Evelyn lived in New Market, Montgomery County, Indiana. He was a minister in the Primitive Baptist Church, represented Boone County in the Indiana Legislature in 1901, was an auditor of Putnam County, Indiana from 1910 to 1914, and was a member of the Odd Fellows and Masonic Lodge. He served churches in Boone, Montgomery, Parke, and Putnam Counties, Indiana. His children were Mayme Airhart Tate, Blanche Jackson, Paul Airhart, Claud (or Claude) Airhart, Jesse Airhart, and Maud (or Maude) Airhart, the last three of whom did not survive him. Two sources give 10 Sep 1863 as his birth date and 1955 as his death date. Survivors included eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren. In 1915 he was said to have "preached more funeral sermons than any other minister in the state."28,29,30,31,32
