She was an inspector for the Army Signal Corps in Des Moines, Iowa, St. Louis, Missouri, Omaha, Nebraska, and Sioux City, Iowa. In Sioux City, she met and married Samuel Bottaro, who was stationed at the Sioux City air base. They moved to Salix, Iowa in the late 1960s. In the 1970s, she was the first person hired at the Iowa Welcome Center at the Sergeant Bluff rest area, and she continued to serve travelers there for more than thirty years. She retired in 2005, after which she moved to Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City.³

     "David Harper, 5, son of Walter Harper of Rice, died in the County Hospital at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday morning as the result of injuries received about 5 o’clock Monday afternoon when the Dallas-Corsicana Interurban struck the car in which he was riding with his rather and Grady Crawford, aged 5.
     "Mr. Harper and the boys were in a Ford coupe and had driven across the track at Rice where the accident occurred. The car turning down the track had not gotten far enough away to avoid being struck by the approaching limited car, and was not seen by the motorman in time to come to a stop before the crash. The coupe was knocked end over end. The injured were picked up and brought to Corsicana on the next Interurban and taken to the hospital.
     "Mr. Harper was driving the coupe and did not see or hear the fast approaching Interurban before being struck.
     "Motorman O. F. Sizemore and Conductor W. L. Darr were manning the limited Interurban.
     "The body of the Harper boy was sent to Rice by the Sutherland Undertaking company early today. Funeral services will be held sometime Wednesday with burial in the cemetery at Chatfield.
     "The little Crawford boy’s condition is regarded as extremely serious. Trepanning to relieve the fractured skull pressure from the brain was done this morning."⁶
• Note*: He died from injuries received when the car in which he was riding was struck by an interurban car about nine hours earlier. His father, who was driving, was injured, and another passenger, also a five-year-old boy, also was killed.⁷
