• Obituary*: "WIDELY KNOWN DOCTOR DIED AT DEL NORTE
     "Dr. John A. Biles, one of the best known physicians of this valley, died Tuesday morning at St. Josephs sanitarium at Del Norte. The doctor had been operated the preceding Thursday for appendicitis and did not have sufficient resistance to recover. He was sick just a short time and diagnosed his own case perfectly, the operation later disclosing a gangrenous and very enlarged appendix and slight chance for recovery owing to Dr. Biles' age. Drs. Trueblood, Davies and Rupert were called and Dr. Biles insisted that they perform the operation immediately. Dr. Biles was born April 26, 1852, in Howard County, Missouri; graduated from Keokuk Medical college in 1879 and practiced his first three years In Salina County, Kansas. He later practiced ten years in Kansas City and then came to Creede in 1892, While in Creede his practice was very strenuous as he was the regular physician for a number of the mining companies besides his general patients. He moved to Del Norte in November, 1913 where he resided until the time of his death. Dr. Biles was a man of very high character and courageous will; a true gentleman and a loyal citizen. He was esteemed very highly by the medical fraternity of this Valley and was successful in his profession, having an almost intuitive gift of diagnosis. He was president of the Valley Medical association and a member of the American Medical association. Dr. Biles is survived by a wife and year-old son. Funeral services will be held at the Del Norte school auditorium, Jan. 13, at two o'clock, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity."¹⁴
